On March 13, 2020, Breonna Taylor was killed by Louisville police in a botched no-knock raid. Her death, and George Floyd's two months later, helped drive that summer's demonstrations over policing and racial injustice. No officer has been charged with her shooting.
404 | Say Their Names is a digital response to that lack of accountability. A 404 error is a server's explanation for absence - the page moved, renamed, or was never there. Requesting a URL built from a victim's name forces the server to write that name into its own error log. The entity says the name it would rather not.
A way to inscribe the names of slain Black women and men onto the server logs of the policing organizations involved. To keep the cases, the lives, the families, from being forgotten
To write to the error logs of those in power.
To push for accountability, transparency, change, justice.
To force them to say the names.
